Photo of Chile's Atacama Desert taken during a field expedition by researchers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The Atacama is the driest non-polar desert on Earth -- and a ready analog for Mars' rugged, arid terrain. Scientists use this environment to test tools for detecting signs of ancient life that may someday be used on other worlds.
