Ralph Edwards’ Truth Or Consequences was an audience participation radio show that became the most popular program series broadcast on Saturday nights. In the fall of 1947, Edwards held a two-month contest that challenged listeners to identify the voice of "Miss Hush". Each week, Miss Hush would provide clues to her identity in the tone of a whisper. The contest ended in December when Martha Graham was correctly identified as Miss Hush by a Texas housewife, Mrs. Ruth Annette Subbie, for $21,500 in prizes. As a result of Graham's appearance on the show, the March of Dimes received over $800,000 from listeners' donations while Truth Or Consequences ratings shot into the mid-twenties. The contest also set a one-day record for mail, 119,000 pieces received on December 6th.
