Mary is sitting with the child on an ornate throne. The lily-sceptre and the orb identify her as the Queen of Heaven, and two lions in the body of the throne allude to the throne of Solomon. In the Middle Ages Mary was perceived as the seat of wisdom, with Christ enthroned on her lap as the new Solomon. The founder Ernst von Pardubitz (d. 1364), the first Archbishop of Prague, is kneeling at Mary's feet. He was appointed bishop in 1343, after studying in Italy and Paris. He raised Prague to the status of archbishopric in 1344, making the city independent from the archbishopric of Mainz.
