Artist information: Gentile da Fabriano was an Italian early Renaissance painter and worked in many places in central Italy. He is presumed to have been apprenticed to Allegretto Nuzi. In 1408 he went to Venice where he painted a fresco in the Doge's Palace between 1409 and 1414 which depicts the naval battle between the Venetians and Otto III. He later worked in Florence and executed his famous altarpiece 'Adoration of the Magi' (1423). It is regarded as one of the masterpieces of the International Gothic style, with da Frabriano one of the movement's key figures. In 1425 he left Florence for Siena and Orvieto where he created the fresco Madonna and Child. Afterwards he was active in Rome where he died in 1427. His style is considered as graceful and his subjects characterized by a plastic quality that reflects the shift from the late Gothic to the Renaissance.
