Elected in 1997, Mary Lou Makepeace served two terms as Colorado Springs’ first female mayor and appointed the city’s first female municipal judges.
A hallmark of her administration was the Springs Community Improvement Program (SCIP) which invited all citizens to participate in brainstorming sessions about city spending priorities. Term limited as mayor, Makepeace became Executive Director of the Gay and Lesbian Fund of Colorado which supports inclusivity and equality.
