On the Northwest Coast, when a girl reached marriageable age her lower lip was pierced with a pin to receive a labret. Several times over the course of her lifetime, she exchanged her labret for a larger one, marking these key moments with a ceremony confirming her rank. The size of the labret on this mask indicates that it represents a woman of high status.

- Description: Sur la côte du Nord-Ouest, lorsqu'une fille était en âge de se marier, sa lèvre inférieure était percée à l'aide d'une épingle afin d'y insérer un labret. Chaque fois que la femme franchissait une étape importante de sa vie, son labret était remplacé par un plus gros lors d'une cérémonie confirmant son rang. Ici, la taille du labret indique que ce masque représente une femme de haut rang.
