Maximilian Friedrich (1708-1784) had been Archbishop and Prine-elector since 1761. When this painting was created, Beethoven was 9 years old. Due to the fact that Beethoven's grandfather conducted the Bonn court chapel, the family had a relationship with the ruler. At the age of 12, Beethoven dedicated three piano sonatas to the Prince.
