Different types of measuring rulers (cheok) were used in Joseon Dynasty depending on their intended uses. Hwagjongcheok was used to produce and tune various musical instruments, while jucheok was used to measure distances, land, and astronomical observation devices such as a rain gauge. Joryegicheok, pobaekcheok, and yeongjocheok were used to make Record of Ritesfor the Royal Ancestral Shrine or National Shrine to Confucius, to tailor clothing, and to build a rampart or a palace, respectively.
