The German doll-making firm of Kammer & Reinhardt offered the first mass-produced character dolls of bisque in 1909. In business since, 1886, K & R designed the company's character doll heads with beguiling faces and various expressions, and each different doll head received a unique mold number to distinguish it from others. The K & R firm used about 100 mold numbers ranging from 100 to 1176.
