The Schuco toy company began in 1912 in Nuremburg, Germany, under the name Spielzeugfirma Schreyer & Co. By 1919, the firm's name was shortened, and its reputation for quality mechanical tin toys was well established. The company's detailed replicas of the popular race cars of the day attracted many enthusiasts; and its Pick-Pick mechanical bird, first sold in the 1920s, remained popular until the 1960s by which time the company has sold more than 20 million units. In the early years, Schuco offered tin and diecast vehicles; by the late 1960s, it produced lighter cars made of plastic. The toy company's financial stability has ebbed and flowed, though it is still in business today producing models cars for collectors.
