Medals casket

Luigi Prinotto1730

Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama
Torino, Italy

In June 1730 the Royal Household effected payment to Luigi Prinotto, one of the great names of Piedmontese cabinet-making, for a casket that was to contain the medals of Louis XV. With two handles at the sides, the casket is inlaid with plant motifs and bandwork which on the front and cover, frame two scenes: on the front is a personification of Fortitude offering Minerva a medal with the profile of Charles Emmanuel III and a putto with a cartouche bearing the words “Aeternitati parantur”, while on the lid putti with a forge are busy striking coins under the supervision of Fame.
