In Homer's Iliad, we read that the goddess Diana sent an enormous boar to Calydon, because the king of that country had failed to sacrifice to her. An attempt to hunt and kill the animal was made and the fierce Atalanta managed to wound it. Her admirer Meleager, son of a king, killed it and presented its head to her. However, his jealous uncles attempted to deprive her of the hunting trophy. Jacob Jordaens depicts the moment when the indignant Meleager draws his sword. In the story, he then kills his uncles and is subsequently cursed by his mother. He was to die a horrible death.
