After the liberation from Japanese colonial rule on August 15th to the end of the 1960s, Taekwondo as it is known today was scattered around the country in over 40 dojangs, which were engulfed in factions. Accordingly, the Korea Taekwondo Association, after an arduous labor, began to integrate the factions and Kwans by organizing the 40-something Kwans into 9 Kwans in 1974.
