The menorah, symbolizing enlightenment, is one of the most important religious symbols in Judaism and always to be found in synagogues. Some families also use it at home, however, by lighting its candles at the beginning of Sabbath, the day of rest. The relief at the base of the menorah shown here is modelled on the Arch of Titus in Rome. The flat, round head covering is worn by male Jews, in particular during prayer, at cemeteries and in the synagogue, and also signalizes religious identity in everyday life.
