This menuki set is carved out of crude copper in the shape of a mythical sea creature with the head of a tiger and the body of a fish. The artificial abrasions can be seen on the gilded surface. The shachihoko is an imaginary creature regarded as a charm to protect from fire. This was a popular ornament motif for buildings and for arms and armors.
