In 1927, inspired by Lindbergh's flight, 16-year-old William F. Milliken began designing an airplane that evolved into a parasol monoplane with a motorcycle engine. Finally, in 1933, Milliken took the M-1 to Old Orchard Beach for tests. It flew, but landing took three attempts, ending when the M-1 flipped over on its back. Encouraged by this flight, he went on to a long aeronautical and automotive career.
