In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, parents gave their children toys to practice skills they would use as adults. While boys might receive steam engines and tool kits, girls received dolls and toys to perfect skills of child care and household management. Doll-sized furniture, such as beds and cradles, high chairs, dining tables, encouraged girls to imitate their mothers in putting their dollies to bed, and bathing, dressing, and feeding them.
