A large group of plaster, pottery, and stone plaques inlaid with glass mirrors have been discovered in tombs. Some bear religious symbols – the cross, the menorah, or the figure of Tyche-Fortuna, the Roman goddess of good fortune. The plaques were believed to provide protection from evil forces by deflecting the harm inflicted back upon the source of the evil.
