Medieval monks had to stand during long church services. They rested against ledges on the underside of fold up seats. These were called misericords from the Latin word for relief. Animals were often carved on misericords and owls were very popular. They were meant to be wise but seeing one was bad luck! This seat was originally from Whitefriars in Coventry.
