This monumental krater was a mixing bowl for diluting wine with water. The wine mixture could be ladled out of its wide mouth and distributed among the drinking bowls of all the merry-makers who were present. The krater was made around 1100 BC, in the period when Greece was ruled by Mycenaean kings. Their best-known heroic exploit was their war with Troy.
