Gong Daoyong, born in 1962 in Zigong of China’s southwestern Sichuan province, is a Chinese arts and crafts master who is also the fourth-generation inheritor of “Gong fans”. In his over 30 years’ career of bamboo knitting, Gong has successfully reduced the thickness of bamboo filaments from 0.025mm to 0.01-0.015mm, thinner than human hair, and width down by 30%.
The use of super fine bamboo filaments has made possible a breakthrough in the texture of this fan. Made of Qingci bamboo, a specialty of Sichuan, this fan has a shape similar to tuanshan silk fans. The painting of the famous Nymph of the Luo River can be clearly seen on the panel with the signature of the creator “Nymph of the Luo River, by Gong Daoyong”. What makes this fan even more special is that when put in direct light, the Nymph would be shrouded in misty white lights, an extremely amazing scene to see. “Gong fans” are also famous for the panel as thin as cicadas’ wings, hence the nickname “cicadas’ wing fans”.
