In the early nineteenth century, lithographs of idealized women and families were a popular way to spread the sentimental and religious values of Romanticism. This woman, personifying the virtue Modesty, is dressed in pseudo-Renaissance costume and is posed with the downcast eyes that characterized the demure ideal of a Romantic-era woman.
