Monkeys are vividly depicted in various situations on the six-fold screen. Some are grooming each other, some are watching butterflies or bees, and others are playing innocently.
Each screen has two seals: ‘杜守象 (Morikata)’ and ‘祖仙 (Sosen)’. Additionally, both ends of the six-fold screen have signatures depicting the words ‘霊明狙仙筆 (From the brush of Reimei Sosen)’. Sosen (1747-1821) was a painter well-known for his realistic and characteristic depiction of monkeys. Judging from the seal and signature, and the drawing style, this work was created when he was over sixty years old.
