Monolithic Axes are made from a single piece of stone. This particular axe is comprised of greywacke (dense sandstone) from the Albany New York area. It was likely carried by a sachem or an elite warrior known as a pneise, and is one of the most enigmatic objects associated with the Pequot War. The prominent bird effigy on the handle is one of several on the axe.
