Taken by the NBR's deputy director, John Summerson, this poignant image shows the damaged monument to Zachariah Mudge in the devastated Church of St Andrew following bombing raids in 1941. Rubble was later cleared from the site and flower beds laid out. Open-air services were held for six years before the church was eventually re-consecrated in 1957.
