Mortar and pestle that represent a feline-owl and a snake ML300029

This is a 3000 years old stone mortar with pestle, found at Pacopampa, a temple located in Cajamarca, northern highlands of Peru. The mortar represents an owl, which fuses with the body of the jaguar; the owl's eyes are surrounded by snakes, and the pestle is also a snake. The mortar’s body is decorated by concentric circles with dots that represent the spots of the jaguar coat, and are also water symbols. In ancient Peru, shamans or priests consumed roots and seeds with psychotropic qualities that enabled them to voluntarily alter their states of consciousness and have transcendental experiences. Hallucinogenic substances were prepared and used in ceremonial containers as this mortar. The states of trance allowed shamans to make contact with the different worlds or cosmic planes. The shapes and designs that mortars like this exhibit, served to symbolically communicate the shamanic visionary. In these objects the connection of the three sacred animals takes place: the feline representing the earthly plane, the owl representing the upper world, and the snake, representing the under world. Este es un mortero de piedra con su mano de moler, provenientes de Pacopampa, un templo de más de 3000 años de antigüedad, ubicado en las alturas de Cajamarca en la sierra norte peruana. El mortero representa a un búho, que se fusiona con el cuerpo del jaguar; los ojos del búho están circundados por serpientes. La mano de moler representa a una serpiente. El cuerpo del mortero está decorado por círculos con puntos concéntricos, que representan las manchas del pelaje del jaguar, y son a su vez símbolos de agua. En el antiguo Perú, los chamanes o sacerdotes consumían plantas, raíces y semillas con cualidades psicotrópicas que les permitían alterar voluntariamente sus estados de conciencia y tener experiencias trascendentales. Las sustancias alucinógenas eran preparadas y consumidas en recipientes ceremoniales como este mortero y mano de moler, cuyas formas y diseños servían para comunicar de manera simbólica la experiencia del chamán, ya que en ellos se puede ver la fusión de los tres animales sagrados: el felino que representa el plano terrenal, el búho que representa el mundo superior, y la serpiente, que representa al mundo de abajo y que a la vez, comunica los planos cósmicos.
