Mosque Lamp

This lamp was made to hang in the Sultan Hasan mosque in Cairo. Although the mosque was the most impressive of its time, its commissioner was not the same. Its grandeur makes sense given the Sultan’s dramatic life and reign. He was unpopular with the Emirs and was arrested twice and then assassinated.

The Sultan shared his father’s passion for grand projects, but this lamp, as well as others like it, doesn’t measure up to the finesse of his father’s commissions. This could be because of the gradual economic decline that was occurring during the time, or perhaps simply that the mosque was so large that the lamps were never meant to be seen up close. The mosque was built at the same time the Black Death was ravaging Egypt, and although this led to a great loss of craftsmen, it also helped fund its construction.

The construction of the mosque was as unlucky as the Sultan. It was planned to have four minarets but only three were built. Furthermore, one of the minarets collapsed during the construction (killing a number of children studying in the madrasa) which many in Cairo saw as foreshadowing the impending downfall of Sultan Hasan.

صُنعت هذه المشكاة لكي يتم تعليقها في مسجد السلطان حسن في القاهرة. ورغم أن المسجد كان الأكثر إبهاراً في عصره، إلا أن هذا الأمر لا ينطبق على من فوّض ببنائه. وتأتي عظمة المسجد من حياة السلطان وفترة حكمه الدراماتيكية، حيث لم يكن يتمتع بالشعبية بين الأمراء وتم اعتقاله مرتين ومن ثم اغتياله.

كان لدى السلطان ووالده شغفٌ بالمشاريع الكبيرة، لكن هذه المشكاة وغيرها، لا تصل إلى مستوى البراعة التي طلبها والده. قد يعود سبب ذلك إلى الانهيار الاقتصادي التدريجي الذي ساد في ذلك العصر، أو ربما لأن المسجد كان كبيراً بحيث لم يكن يُفترض تأمل المصابيح عن قرب. تم تشييد المسجد في نفس فترة تفشي وباء "الموت الأسود" في مصر، ورغم أن هذا تسبب في وفاة الكثير من الحرفيين، إلا أنه ساعد أيضاً في تمويل عملية البناء.

وكان تشييد البناء مشؤوماً شأنه شأن السلطان نفسه. حيث كانت الخطة الأولى تقتضي بناء أربع مآذن، لكن تم بناء ثلاث في النهاية. كما إن واحدة منها انهارت خلال عملية البناء (وهو ما أدى إلى وفاة عدد من الأطفال الذين كانوا يدرسون في الكتّاب) وهو ما اعتبره الكثيرون في القاهرة نذيراً بالسقوط الوشيك للسلطان حسن.
