Painted on a round fan, a common fashion accessory for ladies of the imperial court during the Southern Song dynasty, this work captures the intensity of nature, depicting a waterfall or steep rapids and wind-blown trees in a violent storm. Isolating a single fleeting moment, the artist presents a unified event fused with an extraordinary sense of energy. The fine, forceful brushwork and subtly graded washes admirably define the arching tree branches, silhouetted against thick clouds, and the churning stream as it rushes downhill, spraying foam.
