Hwasun-ri site in Jeju is regarded as the largest archaeological site in the southwestern part of Jeju where the 420 prehistoric remains with 130 dwelling sites were found. Unusual potteries rarely seen in the other regions were found in the site. Among them there were many remains related with religious activities conducted by the prehistoric settlers in the area in the expert's estimation.
Particularly the excavation of this Mounted cup at the Hwasun-ri site in Jeju is unprecedented case because this type of cup is represented the korea's three kingdoms period only in korean peninsula. Experts believe that the cup, along with a stone feature discovered in the same site which they believe was used as an altar, is an artifact used for religious purposes.
