From the Artist: After months of confinement I decided to venture out into the world and explore two of New York’s new architectural constructions. Hudson Yards and the Moynihan Train Station.

While they were my first trips into the city in months, they were not tourist interludes. I spent a few hours at each location walking, exploring and shooting. Having no preconceived idea of what to expect I was able to approach the locations with an open mind full of possibilities ready to be inspired. The locations were empty, one of the very few Covid advantages, allowing me to shoot without human interference. This amplified a feeling of isolation which helpfully is conveyed in the images.

My initial reactions to both places was that the lighting was not particularly dramatic and producing work would require some degree of head scratching. Exposures had to be adjusted to add drama and printing would be critical. Negative space would be emphasized and highlights would be sparse. Since my work is film based there is no ability to see what is captured before processing and requires some degree of imagination to visualize the final product. Often this can result in absolute failure or serendipity. Serendipity is fun especially when it results in changing one’s thoughts and creating a print that was not initially intended but works better than first imagined. I find this to be one of the joys of using film.
