Some four million ibis mummies were buried in antiquity. Many have been discovered over the past few centuries, in diverse Egyptian burial grounds. The mummies were generally placed in stacks of sealed terracotta pots, but some were buried in stone or wooden mummy chests. The inscription on this sarcophagus names the person who presented this mummy as a sacrificial offering. The name is unfortunately illegible.
