The crescent moon at the feet of the Virgin identifies her as the woman of the Apocalypse described in Revelation 12:1, “clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet.” Intended as an object for private devotion, the statuette shows evidence of repeated touching and kisses from worshippers on the Virgin’s hair and face.
