The peacock seems to contradict Darwin's ideas of adaption to life and natural selection as, obviously, the cumbersome plumage makes it more difficult for the bird to fly and can therefore be a handicap when escaping predators. However, what Darwin did not take into account was the great advantage the plumage gives a male peacock for successful mating. Sexual selection is therefore an equally improtant driver of evolution.
