Meidner’s study of religion also found expression in a large number of portraits. These religious images are often self-portraits, even if only individual parts of the face – here, the eyes – bear a resemblance to Meidner’s physiognomy. What all these portraits have in common is a basic rhetorical stance that is communicated to viewers from within the composition. Viewers are directly addressed by a look or a gesture.
