Gifts from Napoleon

The French Emperor Napoleon I (1769-1821) gave this necklace to his second wife, Empress Marie Louise in 1811 to celebrate the birth of their first son. It was made by French jewelers Nitot et Fils. Marie Louise, who was Austrian-born, bequethed the piece to the royal family of Austria.


This necklace contains 172 diamonds, totaling about 260 carats, set in Silver. The diamonds came from India or Brazil. Compare the old style cut of these diamonds with the modern brilliant cut of other diamonds in this collection.
