Pretoria, South Africa

A Dutch Napoleonic War plate commemorating the centenary of freedom (1813-1913) with the Dutch King William’s II initials and royal insignia with orange symbolism. The plate is back marked Arnhem, with a blue cockerel, their factory logo which is also the symbol for the town Arnhem. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1813, as The Netherlands celebrated its Independence, Dutch trade and production flourished and by 1913 they had become one of the industrial leaders in Europe. This plate together with most of the commemorative Dutch war ware was donated by Louise van Gybland Oosterhoff in 1937 to the University of Pretoria.
