On the walls of the side aisles you can see some elaborately designed tombs. Many of them were once scattered all over the floor of the cathedral. Today you still walk over the remains of the deceased. In the 19th century, however, their tomb slabs were placed on the walls of the side aisles or pillars to protect them from further deterioration.
