Sorolla painted several seascapes similar to this one during his formative years in the 1880s, which did not always please the press when they were presented at the National Exhibition held in 1881. However, it is curious to think that, despite the criticism, his most admired and recognisable works are precisely the sea and beach scenes that he would paint, with a very different technique and style, for the rest of his artistic career.
