Gørbitz showed great talent in his early years and was only sixteen years old when he was sent to the art academy in Copenhagen. At the academy, he studied under famous Danish painters Jens Juels and Nikolai Abildgaard. He is mostly known for his miniature paintings but earned his living by painting portraits of the upper class of Christiania, today's Oslo.
