Nineteenth-century women purchased jewelry in matching sets that were intended to be worn together. Full sets usually included a necklace, brooch, bracelet, and earrings. This partial gold and amethyst (purple quartz) set was probably paired with a low-cut evening gown and worn by a well-to-do lady around the time of the American Civil War.
