Rijksmuseum van Oudheden
Leiden, Netherlands

This necklace was found in Abu Roash cemetery site, to the west of Cairo. The dead were given food, in jars made of pottery and stone, as well as other personal items for the afterlife. These items sometimes included simple pieces of jewellery, such as this bead necklace from the grave of a mother with her child. The beads are made of cornelian, a semiprecious red stone. The green faience pendant is a remarkable piece. The falcon-shaped amulet is probably an image of Horus, god of the heavens.
