Necklace with earring and scarabs

Glencairn Museum

Glencairn Museum
Bryn Athyn, United States

“A Roman gold earring (dating to the 2nd-3rd century CE) is used as a central pendant on this necklace, which also includes two ancient Egyptian scarabs. One of the scarabs bears an image of a baboon facing a cartouche with the name of Pharaoh Tuthmosis III (r. 1504-1450 BCE). The hieroglyphs above identify him as the “Good God, Lord of the Two Lands.” (Jennifer Wegner, label text, “Sacred Adornment: Jewelry as Belief in Ancient Egypt”)
