Robert Phillips was one of the most important London jewellers working in the revivalist taste. Themes from historic periods were drawn from a wide range of sources. The writer Mrs Haweis recalled a visit to Phillips in Cockspur Street in her book, The Art Of Beauty: "Under the direction of Messrs Phillips, the most perfect models are sought for the ornaments they furnish. Museums and picture galleries are ransacked for devices of necklaces, earrings and pendants."
