Among the deshabillé du matin clothing that remained strictly inside the home were the negligee and peignoir, a dressing gown made of a loosely draped length of fabric that originated with the hairdressing cape, and which was closely associated witht he morning toilet. Given that this ritual often had a social function among the fashionable and wealthy, where guests were received, the apparel was responsive to fashion. Because of the original function of the garment, which was to protect clothing when applying make-up, people often selected washable linen for the purpose.
