He was born in 1918 as a son of the leader of the Thembu people. When he was in college, he entered the African National Congress (ANC) and worked to end apartheid. In 1964, he was arrested for his anti-government activities and sentenced to life in prison; but was freed after 26 years. In 1993, he peacefully ended the apartheid system and received the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994, he won the first multi-racial election in South African history and became president. He has come to Japan with representatives of the ANC. Today, he is a UNESCO good will ambassador.
