This part of the building, crammed with machinery, was built between 1870 and the early 1880s to modernise the mill and the key processes of bobbin manufacture were relocated here. Old lathes from the first floor of the old mill were probably moved here, mounted on timber ‘beds,’ made of two parallel wooden beams fixed to the fabric of the building. The new shop accommodated faster, more modern machines, which were mounted on their own iron frames fixed to the ground.
