Newspaper report on the force-feeding of Suffragette prisoners

Front page of the Daily Sketch newspaper dated 1 May 1913. The headline reads 'All the Suffragist leaders arrested We will all starve to death in prison unless we are forcibly fed'. Below is a 'mock up' photograph showing a suffragette prisoner being force fed by a tube inserted in her mouth. The photograph, staged by the WSPU, was intended to shock the public into protesting against the brutality of this practice that was being experienced by hunger striking suffragette prisoners on a daily basis.
