"In the Cemetery" was exhibit in the Paris Salon of 1890 that, for the first time, opened its doors to Veloso Salgado. This painting translates a melancholy and symbolic atmosphere in an allegory of the transience of life. In it, the atmosphere of solitude and abandonment in the sad figure of the girl, kneeling near the grave where she deposited a bunch of flowers, is accentuated in a resigned attitude of which the discouraged presence of the epitaphs and the cold tones of the landscape seem to commune. However, the apparent pregnancy of the figure and the lunar crescent, which is cut in the sky, stands out as symbols of the life that is renewed, continues and perpetuates.
