Kariginu was originally informal wear for noblemen in the Heian period (794-1185) of Japan. In Noh plays, a lined Kariginu costume with gold brocade like this robe is worn by a majestic and powerful character such as a god or demon. The gold Genji wheels are placed freely and rhythmically on the dark blue background which makes this piece particularly refined.
