After the fall of the Taira clan, Kagekiyo stabbed out his eyes because he could not tolerate the enemy, the Genji clan flourishing, and became a blind, biwa (lute)-playing, lay Buddhist priest. Even though he is decrepit and ugly with age, his face has remnants of his old days as a brave warrior. The peculiarity of a blind man mask is its hollowed out eyes.
